Stjepan Šandrk's „Spectacle“ at Bačva gallery
On Wednesday, July 19, at 20.00, the exhibition of Spektakl, by Stjepan Šandrk, was opened at the Gallery of "Bačva", The Croatian Association of Artists in Zagreb.
It is an independent exhibition of large format images and indeed is a spectacle. For the first time, artists new approach to images assumes that the image functions as a construction. Though they are created in a way that mimics the photography, it is no longer a scene of documentary character (even staged), but a complex scene created by digital manipulation, which was later translated into the medium of painting. We can say that this is a conscious falsification of the reality that exists simultaneously as a product of the same reality.
"A group of Canadian tourists taking a selfie, as well as the North Koreans on the excursion, I've pre-empted somewhere on the Internet," Stjepan said. "Their phenomenon, in that environment, is completely unacceptable to me, but at the same time it helps me to see the way we observe the culture within the post-industrial era."
Stjepan graduated painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 2006, same generation as reputable Croatian contemporary artists like Zlatan Vehabović. He got his Ph.D. in 2015. He is a member of The Croatian Association of Visual Artists (HDLU) and Croatian community of independent artists (HZSU). He participated and created in several art residencies and has exhibited 18 times alone and fifty times in collective jury exhibitions. He has been awarded several times and his paintings are sought out all over the world.
Šandrk is an extremely talented young artist. With only 33 years, his paintings are part of many collections all over the world. His fame is well deserved since he's extremely hard working and most productive artist in recent 15 years. This year he spent a month creating new pieces in his temporary studio Spinnerei in Leipzig. He's been working on the Spectacle for a long time and it is a great success for Stjepan to have the painting displayed at the “Bačva” gallery.
The exhibition will be displayed until 30 July 2017. In case you don't want to miss the Spectacle, make the plans for this weekend.
